Combined Defence Services Exam (UPSC CDSE)

UPSC conducts a Combined Defence Services Examination for admission to the various courses.

Eligibility for UPSC CDSE:

Only Unmarried male candidates are eligible.

Age: For Air Force: 18 to 22 years.

For IMA: 18 to 24 years.

For Naval Academy: 18 to 23 years (18 to 25 years in case of NCC/Naval Wing ‘C’ Certificate holders)

For Officers Training Academy-(SSC Course for Men): 18 to 24 years

For Officers’ Training Academy – (SSC Women Non-Technical Course): 18 to 24 years

Nationality: (i) A citizen of India, Nepal, Bhutan or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries Kenya, Uganda, The United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

(ii) A Tibetan refugee who came over before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Physical Standards: Candidates must be physically fit according to the prescribed physical standards.

Educational Qualification for UPSE CDSE:

  • For Air Force Academy : Degree of Recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.
  • For I.M. A. and Officers’ Training Academy: Degree of a recognized University or equivalent.
  • For Naval Academy : B.Sc. (with Physics & Mathematics) or Bachelor of Engineering.

Graduates with first choice as Army/Navy/Air Force are to submit proof of graduation provisional certificates on the date of commencement of the SSB Interview at the SSB. Candidates who are studying in the final year Degree course and have yet to pass the final year degree examination can also apply

Exam Pattern for UPSE CDSE:

For Admission to Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy. The papers in all the subjects consist of objective type questions only.

The question papers (test booklets) of general knowledge and elementary mathematics are set in Hindi as well as English.

  • English (120 minutes / 100 marks)
  • General Knowledge (120 minutes / 100 marks)
  • Elementary Mathematics (120 minutes / 100 marks)

For Admission to Officers’ Training Academy

  • English (120 minutes / 100 marks)
  • General Knowledge (120 minutes / 100 marks)

Interview:

The candidate will be interviewed by a Board for admission to the Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers’ Training Academy respectively. 200 marks for interview.

Selected candidates can get admission in the following courses.

  • Indian Military Academy Dehradun for NCC ‘C Certificate (Army Wing) holders
  • Air Force Academy, Hyderabad (Pre-Flying) Training Course
  • Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai SSC Course (for men)
  • Naval Academy Goa-Course commencing in Executive (General service/Hydro) [including ten reserved for NCC ‘C Certificate holders (Naval Wing)]
  • Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai (Madras) SSC Women Non-Technical Course

How to Apply for UPSE CDSE:

The completed application form must reach Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur House, NC Delhi 110069 on or before the specified date.
