SSC conducts Combined All India Open Exam for recruitment to the posts of Data Entry Operator and Lower Division Clerk, Stenographer. This exam is called Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination, minimum qualification to appear in this exam is Intermediate or equivalent from a recognised Board or University.
Eligibility for SSC Stenographer:
- Nationality:Applying candidate must be citizen of India / Nepal / Bhutan. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
- Age: Applying candidate must be aged between 18-27 years. Age on Matriculation certificate will be considered as proof of Age.
- Education: 12th Standard or equivalent from a recognised Board or University.
- Medical Eligibility: A candidate must be in good mental and free from any physical defect which is likely to interfere with the efficient discharge of his/her duties as an Officer of the Service. A candidate who, after such medical examination as may be prescribed by the competent authority, is found not to satisfy these requirements, would be disappointed then and there.

- ARITHMETIC: Computation of Whole Number, Relationship between numbers, Decimal and Fractions, Time and work, Percentages, Time and distance, Mixture and Alligation, Square roots, Partnership Business, Averages, Discount, Interest (Simple and Compound), Profit and Loss.
- ALGEBRA: Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra, Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear Equations.
- GEOMETRY: Triangle and its various kinds of centres viz. Centroid, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circumcentre, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles, In-centre, Orthocentre.
- MENSURATION: Triangle, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square Base, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Circle, Sphere, Hemispheres, Right Prism, Sphere, Hemispheres, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder.
- TRIGONOMETRY: Trigonometry, Trigonometric ratios, Heights and Distances, Complementary Angles, Standard Identities, Degree and Radian Measures.
- STATISTICAL CHARTS: Histogram, Pie-chart, Frequency polygen, Bar-diagram
SSC Combined 12th Level Written Exam Pattern:
Maximum Time: 120 Minutes (2 hours)
- General Intelligence (50 questions / 50 marks)
- English Language (50 questions / 50 marks)
- Quantitative Aptitude (50 questions / 50 marks)
- General Awareness (50 questions / 50 marks)
Exam pattern: There will be negative marking of 0.25 for each incorrect answer.
- Skill Test (Stenographer and LDC)
Stenography Test :
Candidates will be given one dictation for 10 minutes in English / Hindi at the speed of 100 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade ‘C’ and 80 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade ‘D’.
The matter will have to be transcribed on computer only:
- Stenographer Grade ‘D’ : 50 minutes (English) 65 minutes (Hindi)
- Stenographer Grade ‘C’:40 minutes (English) 55 Minutes (Hindi)
Typing Test for LDC:
Typing Test (qualifying in nature) conducted for a particular category later for those candidates who qualify the main exam.
Skill Test for Lower Division Clerks: Candidates opting for English medium should have typing speed of 35 words per minute and those opting for Hindi medium should have typing speed of 30 words per minute. 35 w.p.m. and 30 w.p.m. corresponds to 10500 key depressions per hour/9000 key depressions per hour respectively.
