How Are Volcanoes Formed?

Cream Section Separator

A volcano is formed when a tectonic plate slides underneath another one.

This causes a buildup of pressure in the mantle, and the molten material rises.

It then finds a way to reach the surface of the earth through cracks.

Once it reaches the surface, the molten material is called lava.

The molten material is called magma, and it is lighter than the surrounding solid rock.

The material rises in a volcano's magma chamber, which is miles below the surface.

As the pressure builds inside the mountain, the magma eventually erupts and forms lava.

In some cases, a volcano might form underwater.

Volcanoes are most often formed on tectonic plates that diverge or converge.
