What is a volcano?
A volcano is a mountain, island, or landscape that is composed of unique rocks and they are often highlighted in bright colors on geological maps. Volcanoes are classified as active, dormant, or extinct based on their status. Different volcanoes produce different kinds of lava.
Land volcanoes occur when tectonic plates move under each other. Usually, an oceanic plate subducts beneath a continent, creating a volcanic region. The high pressure and heat created by the subduction process causes rock to melt and form a magma chamber. The magma then rises over weak areas in the Earth’s crust, causing an eruption.
When a volcano erupts, lava flows are the result. Magma is a semi-liquid rock that contains dissolved gases and can force its way through fissures and cracks. When it finally reaches the surface of a volcano, it may flow out like an overflowing cup. This is what we call lava. It is a form of ash that is produced during an eruption.
If you find yourself trapped near an active volcano, the best thing to do is evacuate and keep yourself and your family safe. The ash and mudfalls can be a danger, so you need to stay indoors and close all your windows.
