When Was Basketball Invented?
It is not entirely clear who first created the sport, but Dr. James Naismith, a physical education instructor at a Springfield, Massachusetts school, is believed to first play it in 1891 with his friends, and hung a peach basket on the lower rail of a gym rafter. Players attempted to lob the ball into the basket, scoring points. As a result, the game was originally called basketball.
Naismith’s invention of the sport came about because of his love for basketball. He played it at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The sport was so popular that it eventually spread to other YMCA’s and high schools. He even started an elite basketball team, the Harlem Globetrotters, whose salaries came mostly from exhibition games. Today, basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world. And while it is difficult to trace the game’s beginnings, we do know it became a billion dollar industry.
Basketball was influenced by many sports, and some of the original rules were adapted from other games.
