How Long Have Humans Been on Earth?

The question of how long humans have been on earth has long occupied the scientific world. The evolution of modern humans is largely based on their migration out of Africa. These modern humans likely had similar appearances and were highly cooperative, which would explain their rapid spread across the planet. Today, we are close to eight billion people in the world and they differ little from early Homosapiens.

The earliest hominin fossils were found in Africa 200,000-300,000 years ago, and it’s believed that humans first appeared between five and seven million years ago. By that time, ape-like creatures in Africa began walking on two legs habitually, making stone tools, and spreading to Asia. It’s not entirely clear how far modern humans evolved, but researchers are fairly sure it began approximately 6,000 years ago. Today, we know that humans first evolved from hominins, a group that includes both apes and humans.

Their tools were primitive compared to those of Neanderthals and modern hunter-gatherer societies. But their artistic flair and advanced sense of proportions hints at music and artistic creativity. The arrival of Homosapiens to Australia proves that they were capable of sea faring and left Africa. This was the beginning of human civilization on the Earth.
