Is Sociology a Science?

When we study society, is sociology a science? Many sociologists believe that it is. However, this view is outdated and largely based on personal beliefs. Regardless of the fact that sociology has its place in society, it is important to distinguish it from other science fields. A science can be defined as anything that is empirical and measurable. The definition of a science depends on what it measures and how it measures it.

Sociology is not science: Argument

One of the main differences between science and sociology is the way we define scientific knowledge. One school of thought calls sociology a social science and a positivist view believes it is not. While these two approaches differ in their approach, both share the belief that sociological factors have an impact on human behaviour and beliefs. In
the positivist view, science is about controlled environments where variables can be measured and tested. A postmodern view, however, considers social factors as influencing every aspect of human life.

Sociology is science: Argument

People who believe Sociology is a science because it employs a systematic method to study social behavior. Researchers apply rigorous scientific methods to study the social world and try to avoid biases. These methods include collecting data, conducting research and interpreting results. In addition to scientific methodology, sociologists apply methods of observation, measurement, and analysis to make predictions and suggest testable preventative measures. While a science cannot predict the future, it can provide important information about human behavior.
